Andy Griffith Composer Earle Hagen (1919-2008)

The composer of what is possibly the most recognizable TV theme ever has died. Earle Hagen was 88 years old.

He is probably one of those people that you’ve never heard of, but his work has woven its way into your subconscious:

For television, he composed original music for more than 3,000 episodes, pilots and TV movies, including theme songs for “That Girl,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” [CNN]

Quite a timeless body of work. In honor, here’s a pretty respectable fingerpickin’ version of The Andy Griffith Theme (Fishing Hole) from the YouTubes.
